Issue Position: Political Reform

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2012

The political system in Washington D.C. has never been more dysfunctional. The politicians and special interests have worked hand in hand to ensure that the system that suits them best stays in place, despite the difficulties that the average American faces as a result.

The ideas to kickstart political reform are:

Get the Politicians Out of DC

Revise the filibuster in the Senate

Enact the Stock Act

Require a 30 day waiting period prior to purchasing stock, except for recurring purchases and IPOs

Require real time posting of stock purchases on their congressional website

10 year ban for elected officials and staff from working for think tanks, PACs, lobbyists and contracting with federal agencies. Federal appointments would be allowed. In other words, representing the citizens of the United States should not be considered a stepping stone for a career in the D.C. stew

Every line item of an appropriation bill must have a sponsor/author listed. This will help to make politicians accountable for the pork and bad programs that they sneak into bills using vague language.

Create a registry where elected representatives can indicate how they became familiar with the contents of a bill.

Require that the calendar of the elected official be posted on their federal website. Meetings that involve national security should be posted but without details and marked confidential.

Allow for every elected member of the House of Representatives to identify 5 pieces of legislation that would receive an up or down vote on the floor of the House.

More ideas will be added as the campaign continues. I welcome your feedback and ideas!
